(Jaffna, Mullaitive, Kilinochchi, Vavuniya and Mannar) 13th December – 3rd March 2020

Even though the Tourism Industry has lots of potentials to develop the rural community as a sustainable mechanism for poverty alleviation, cooperative sector has not yet used this magical entrepreneurship opportunities. EFECS which is a project designed to establish an entrepreneurial financial center for Sri Lanka has identified the requirement of establishing tourism among potential rural communities in Sri Lanka. As a result of this, EFECS team has successfully developed a mechanism to establish tourism in the non-existing villages in the Northern Province with the participation of community members. In this effort, both members in cooperative societies as well as the existing tourism entrepreneurs in each district will be benefitted.

As a proposal made by the Urban Development Authority at the Tourism Stakeholders Forum held on 01st October 2019 regarding the Tourism Value Chain, EFECS followed a scientific approach to collect spatial data to prepare a geospatial database in each district with the participation of cooperative community. Tourism Development potentials were identified using the geo-special analysis and accordingly the most practical strategies to implement the existing tourism entrepreneurial opportunities in each area was identified. The strategic direction proposed by the villagers were further validated at a Focused Group Discussion held in participation with the leading tourism stakeholders in the district.

Project received the community participation mainly from SANASA Societies as well as the Cooperative Societies in each district. Community was actively participated at this assignment using the knowledge given at the Introductory Programmes conducted by EFECS previously.
